The Institut of Human Factors and Process Optimization was founded to provide a scientifically grounded yet practice-oriented perspective on the interaction between people, departments, and processes within organizations. Our approach integrates two disciplines that are typically treated separately in both research and practice, even though they are inseparable by nature: human factors and process management.
Our Approach
Business success is rarely determined by the isolated optimization of individual tasks. What matters is the reliability of collaboration between employees, teams, and entire departments. Process interfaces are always human interfaces. This is where friction, delays, and conflicts arise or, in the best case, genuine value creation.
Process-management methods such as Lean, Six Sigma, or Kanban focus on tasks. Human Factor Concepts examine workload, motivation, and interpersonal interaction. Yet none of the established methods consider the needs of the people working in subsequent process steps; those who depend on the outputs of others. Our institute closes this critical gap.
We view human factors science not simply as a human resources or psychological domain, but as the science of human-centered process integration. Motivation, too, is not an end in itself: effective collaboration increases productivity, reduces errors, strengthens organizational culture, and ultimately enhances long-term competitiveness.
Our Focus
We believe the key to organizational success lies in combining classical leadership and human resources management with modern process management. Together with corporate partners, we develop and implement methods to enhance:
- the measurability of collaboration,
- the reliability of processes,
- the effectiveness of leadership,
- professional systemic consulting practices, and
- the strategic positioning of employer branding.
We work across disciplines with SMEs, large corporations, hospitals, and public institutions, including the German Armed Forces. Our research combines scientific rigor with practical applicability. All our institute members have many years of, partly international, management and leadership experience.
