Professor Dr Marianne Schmolke, Vice-Rector for Education at our UAS, addressed the participants of the interdisciplinary working forum of Definetz e. V. at InnovationPort Wismar. Professor Steffan, who teaches and conducts research at the Faculty of Economics, contributed a short scientific presentation to the expert discussions in the afternoon.
The focus of his presentation, entitled ‘Heart Safety Online,’ was the work on the association's extensive AED cadastre, which was likewise presented at the IT conference DOAG 2025. It is a hosted web application with an object-relational database that is being prototypically migrated into a modern cloud environment. The presentation discussed concrete technical strategies and challenges of data migration, including performance considerations, data validation and the implementation of geospatial functionalities. By providing real-time digital access to data on defibrillator availability, the system makes a crucial contribution to improving the discoverability of automated external defibrillators (AEDs). Planned further developments of the system include, for example, the expansion and generalization of interfaces and procedures for optimized location planning.
Since 2015, AEDs have been clearly visible and freely accessible at all locations of our UAS. On the Wismar campus, there is one in the university library and one in Building 1, where the departments and service facilities are located. Operating instructions and instructional videos – also in English – are available to university members on the internal portal.
