Obituary: Prof. Dr sc. oec. Norbert Schuppan

It is with great sadness that the Wismar Business School and the entire university bid him farewell.

A native of Wismar, he studied business administration in Merseburg and was awarded a Dr. oec. in 1978 and a Dr. sc. oec. in 1984 at Humboldt University in Berlin. Alongside his academic work, he held senior positions in the business world. Following roles as Director of Economics at an industrial company and as a lecturer at Humboldt University, he worked, amongst other things, in the controlling department of the GreCon Group in Alfeld and in the management of its American subsidiary.

In 1998, he accepted a post at Wismar University of Applied Sciences. Until his retirement in 2017, he taught general business administration, specialising in finance and financial management. His many years of experience in the business world shaped both his teaching and his academic approach.

His research interests extended far beyond corporate finance. He focused particularly intensively on the causes and consequences of international financial market crises, as well as their impact on global economic development. In his monographs “Global Recession – Causes, Interrelationships, Consequences” (2011) and “The Euro Crisis” (2013), he examined the economic and political interrelationships underlying these developments.

His connection to the university and its students remained strong even after his retirement. He continued to work as a lecturer on the distance-learning programme at Wismar University, imparting his knowledge of management accounting and finance with great energy, professional passion and a keen sense of current economic developments. Combining theoretical principles with practical experience from the business world was a particular priority for him.

With the passing of Prof. Dr. sc. oec. Norbert Schuppan, Wismar Business School has lost a highly regarded scholar and dedicated university lecturer who remained committed to academic education even beyond his active service.

We shall honour his memory.
